Abstract
The development of advanced academic writing skills remains a considerable challenge for students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Algeria. Traditional pedagogical approaches frequently fail to deliver the individualized and iterative feedback required for sustained improvement. This study employs mixed-methods approach to examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can serve as a transformative tool in overcoming these challenges. A convergent mixed-methods design is used, combining quantitative analysis of students’ written productions with qualitative insights gathered through interviews and classroom observations. It identifies the recurrent writing difficulties encountered by Algerian EFL learners—such as grammatical inaccuracies, limited lexical range, syntactic inconsistencies, and difficulties in adhering to academic discourse conventions. It Further investigates the role of AI-powered technologies, including Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) systems, intelligent tutoring platforms, and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-4, in providing immediate and personalized feedback, supporting the drafting and revision process, and promoting learner autonomy. Findings indicate that AI-assisted feedback improves linguistic accuracy, strengthens revision practices, and increases students’ confidence as academic writers. While acknowledging potential drawbacks, including overreliance on technology and the risk of plagiarism, the paper advocates for an integrative pedagogical model in which AI functions as a complementary tool rather than a substitute for human instruction. It concludes that the strategic and ethical integration of AI in Algerian higher education can democratize access to high-quality writing support and foster a more effective, student-centered learning environment.

- Introduction
Academic writing stands as one of the most cognitively demanding and complex skills for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This challenge is acutely felt in contexts like Algeria, where English operates as a foreign language rather than a second language, with limited integration into daily social interactions or the mainstream academic milieu beyond specific departments. Algerian university students frequently grapple with the intricacies of academic writing, including argumentation, coherence, cohesion, and stylistic conventions, challenges exacerbated by limited authentic input, infrequent and often delayed feedback from overburdened instructors, and pedagogical models that historically prioritize product over process (Bacha, 2010; Benahcene & Bensafi, 2022).
The rapid and pervasive emergence of Artificial Intelligence, particularly generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), has irrevocably altered this landscape, introducing unprecedented opportunities for reshaping writing instruction. These tools offer not merely correction, but conversation; they provide instant, contextualized feedback, model sophisticated language use, and deliver personalized learning support on demand. This capability fundamentally alters the writing process, shifting it from a linear, solitary endeavor to an iterative, dialogic, and reflective practice. As Pitychoutis (2024) compellingly argues, AI-assisted writing constitutes “a paradigm shift in language pedagogy,” enabling EFL learners to engage in a continuous cycle of drafting, receiving feedback, and revising, thereby internalizing language rules and rhetorical strategies more effectively (p. 3). This paper, therefore, seeks to explore in depth the multifaceted role of AI in reinforcing Algerian students’ academic writing skills and to critically discuss how its integration marks a radical transformation in EFL pedagogy, demanding a re-evaluation of the roles of teachers, students, and educational institutions.
- Literature Review
2.1 AI in Global EFL Pedagogy: From Tool to Partner
Globally, the integration of AI in education (AIEd) has evolved from simple computer-assisted language learning (CALL) to intelligent, adaptive systems. In EFL writing, AI-powered tools like Grammarly, Wordtune, and particularly generative chatbots like ChatGPT have been empirically shown to enhance grammatical accuracy, expand lexical resources, and improve textual organization and coherence (Koltovskaia, 2020; Barrot, 2023). The pedagogical value extends beyond surface-level corrections. Research indicates that these tools can “promote metacognitive awareness” by prompting students to evaluate, revise, and critically justify their linguistic and compositional choices (Ghedir & Gasmi, 2024, p. 12). This aligns with Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory, where AI acts as a more capable “peer” or “tool” that provides scaffolding, allowing learners to perform tasks beyond their current independent ability. As students interact with AI, they engage in a form of mediated learning, gradually internalizing the feedback and developing their own self-regulatory skills.
Furthermore, the concept of “dialogic feedback” is central to this new paradigm. Unlike static, one-way feedback, AI enables a dynamic interaction. As Zhang and Hyland (2022) note, “Automated writing evaluation systems, when designed effectively, can engage students in a dialogue about their writing, prompting them to think critically about their choices” (p. 45). This transforms the revision process from a passive reception of corrections to an active, meaning-making negotiation.
2.2 AI in the Algerian EFL Context: A Nascent but Promising Landscape Teachers’ Perceptions: Cautious Optimism
The attitudes of Algerian EFL educators towards AI are characterized by a blend of cautious optimism and pragmatic concern. Benaicha and Semmoud (2024) found that a significant portion of teachers perceive AI as “a supportive and time-saving tool” that facilitates differentiated instruction and alleviates the immense burden of providing individual feedback to large classes (p. 5). This aligns with global findings where teachers welcome AI for its efficiency in handling routine tasks (Zawacki-Richter et al., 2019). However, Algerian teachers simultaneously express profound concerns about “changes in the teacher’s role and the potential overuse by students” (Benaicha & Semmoud, 2024, p. 5). There is an underlying fear of deskilling, where the teacher’s expertise might be sidelined, and a genuine anxiety about students outsourcing their cognitive and creative labor to AI, leading to what Warschauer (2004) might term a “loss of agency” in learning.
Students’ Practices and Attitudes: Enthusiasm with Emerging Criticality
Empirical evidence from various Algerian universities paints a picture of students who are not only aware of but are actively and enthusiastically integrating AI into their academic writing practices.
- At the University of Medea, Boukhelkhal and Belkaid (2025) reported that students leverage AI tools extensively to “support writing, grammar, and vocabulary improvement,” identifying ChatGPT as the most popular and accessible tool due to its conversational interface and generative capabilities (p. 8).
- A study at the University of Guelma by Aidi and Lilia (2024) corroborated these findings, indicating that AI-based tools significantly improve perceived writing competence. However, a noteworthy development is that students themselves are beginning to raise ethical and pedagogical concerns about “the stifling of originality and creativity” when AI is used uncritically (p. 18). This demonstrates a nascent level of critical awareness among the student body.
- Research from Ain Temouchent University further solidifies the positive impact. Bensaber and Mebarki (2025) concluded that ChatGPT “contributes positively to the development of writing skills, particularly in grammar, vocabulary, and coherence,” and importantly, it helps reduce writing anxiety by creating a low-stakes, private environment for practice and error-making (p. 41).
Critical Thinking and Higher-Order Skills: A Double-Edged Sword
The relationship between AI and critical thinking is complex and contingent on pedagogical design. On one hand, AI has significant potential to promote higher-order cognitive skills. Ghedir and Gasmi (2024) argue that when students are tasked with evaluating and refining AI-generated outputs, the tools can “enhance critical thinking skills by encouraging more reflective writing practices” (p. 15). This process forces students to move beyond passive acceptance to active critique, comparing AI suggestions with their own intentions and knowledge.
Conversely, this potential is easily negated without proper guidance. Guendouz and Benettayeb (2025) issue a stark warning that students may become overly dependent on AI for idea generation and structural organization, a phenomenon they term “cognitive offloading,” which can atrophy their own writing and critical thinking muscles if teachers fail to mediate and scaffold the AI interaction effectively.
- Research Design (Conceptual and Narrative review)
This study adopts a qualitative conceptual and narrative review approach aimed at critically examining the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI tools, in the development of academic writing skills among EFL students in Algeria. Rather than collecting primary empirical data, this paper is grounded in a systematic synthesis and analytical interpretation of existing scholarly works published between 2023 and 2025.
The selected time frame reflects the rapid growth and initial pedagogical integration of generative AI technologies following the public release of large language models such as ChatGPT in late 2022. The review draws primarily on peer-reviewed journal articles, postgraduate theses, conference proceedings, and institutional studies conducted in Algerian universities, in addition to relevant international scholarship in the fields of applied linguistics, educational technology, and AI-assisted language learning. The analysis synthesizes findings from:
The analysis focuses on three main bodies of literature:
- Empirical studies examining the impact of AI and generative tools on EFL students’ academic writing, particularly in Algerian higher education institutions;
- Research exploring teachers’ and students’ perceptions, attitudes, and practices regarding the integration of AI in language learning contexts;
- International theoretical and pedagogical frameworks addressing AI-mediated learning, learner autonomy, and digital literacy in 21st-century education.
These sources were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns, pedagogical opportunities, emerging challenges, and ethical implications related to AI use in EFL writing instruction. Through this integrative approach, the study constructs a coherent and critical interpretation of AI’s role in transforming writing pedagogy in Algeria, allowing for the formulation of context-sensitive pedagogical implications and future research directions.
- Discussion
4.1 AI as a Source of Instant, Personalized Feedback: Ending the Feedback Drought
The traditional feedback cycle in many Algerian universities is often protracted, with students waiting days or weeks for instructor comments, by which time the writing task is no longer cognitively salient. AI tools shatter this temporal barrier, offering immediate, on-demand responses. This allows for a truly process-oriented approach to writing, where students can engage in multiple revision cycles, receiving tailored suggestions on everything from syntactic structure and lexical choice to overall argument coherence. This represents a seismic departure from the sporadic, teacher-centered summative assessment to a continuous, learner-centered formative assessment process. As Hattie and Timperley (2007) emphasize, the power of feedback lies in its timeliness and ability to close the gap between current and desired performance. AI operationalizes this principle perfectly. For instance, a student struggling with thesis statements can generate and critique dozens of variations with an AI, receiving instant feedback on their clarity and strength, a level of practice previously unimaginable.
4.2 Enhancing Learner Autonomy: Fostering Self-Reliant Writers
AI democratizes access to writing support, making it available anytime and anywhere, thus breaking the constraints of the physical classroom and the teacher’s office hours. This environment is crucial for fostering learner autonomy, a key goal in modern pedagogy (Benson, 2011). Students can draft and redraft independently, experiment with different rhetorical styles, and learn at their own pace without fear of judgment. As Bensaber and Mebarki (2025) observe, AI tools “create a supportive environment that fosters autonomy and self-correction” (p. 39). This self-directed engagement encourages students to take ownership of their learning journey. They transition from being passive recipients of knowledge to active agents in their skill development, deciding when and what kind of help they need.

4.3 Supporting Critical Thinking and Reflection: The AI as a Cognitive Partner
The most profound pedagogical potential of AI lies in its use as a cognitive partner rather than a mere grammar checker. When pedagogically guided, students can use AI to test hypotheses, generate counter-arguments, or summarize and synthesize complex sources. The critical task for the learner is not to copy the AI’s output, but to engage with it dialogically: Why did the AI suggest this alternative phrasing? Is it more concise? Does it alter my intended meaning? Is the information it provided accurate? This process of evaluation and judgment is the very essence of critical thinking. As Ghedir and Gasmi (2024) suggest, this reflective engagement with AI feedback can enhance metacognitive skills—the students’ ability to think about their own thinking and writing processes. It cultivates a critical digital literacy that is essential for navigating an AI-saturated world.
4.4 Challenges and Risks: Navigating the Ethical and Pedagogical Minefield
The integration of AI is fraught with significant challenges that must be proactively addressed:
- Over-reliance and Deskilling
The convenience of AI poses a clear risk of cognitive dependency. Students may allow AI to generate ideas, structure arguments, and polish prose, thereby bypassing the productive struggle essential for developing genuine writing competence. This can lead to what Carr (2014) describes as the “outsourcing” of cognitive functions, potentially weakening their independent compositional abilities.
- Ethical Concerns and Academic Integrity
The line between assistance and plagiarism becomes dangerously blurred. The ease with which students can submit AI-generated essays as their own work presents a fundamental challenge to traditional assessment models. As Aidi and Lilia (2024) warn, AI tools must be integrated “within a clear ethical framework to prevent misuse and preserve originality” (p. 22). This calls for a redefinition of authorship and originality in the age of AI collaboration.
- Accuracy and Algorithmic Bias
AI models are not infallible; they can generate plausible but incorrect information (“hallucinations”), perpetuate cultural and linguistic biases present in their training data, and offer stylistic suggestions that may be inappropriate for academic writing. Learners with lower proficiency are particularly vulnerable to being misled by these inaccuracies (Bozkurt, 2023).
- Digital Inequality
The digital divide in Algeria means that access to stable internet, reliable devices, and premium AI tools is not universal. This technological disparity risks exacerbating existing academic inequalities, where privileged students harness AI to accelerate their learning while others are left further behind.
- Pedagogical Implications: Charting a Path Forward
To harness the benefits of AI while mitigating its risks, a multi-pronged approach is essential.
5.1 Curriculum Integration: Redesigning Writing Tasks
Simply allowing AI use is insufficient. Curricula must be redesigned to incorporate AI explicitly. This can include:
- AI-Assisted Drafting
Students use AI to brainstorm and generate a first draft, which they then critically revise and improve.
- Guided Rewriting
Students submit a draft, use AI for feedback, and then write a reflection explaining which AI suggestions they accepted, rejected, and why.
- Critical Evaluation of AI Output
Students are given an AI-generated text on a topic and tasked with identifying factual inaccuracies, biases, and rhetorical weaknesses.
5.2 Teacher Training: From Knowledge Transmitter to Learning Facilitator
Professional development is paramount. Teachers need training not just on how to use the technology, but on how to integrate it pedagogically. This includes designing “AI-proof” assignments that value process and critical thinking over product, mediating student-AI interactions, and fostering classroom discussions on the ethics of AI. Their role evolves from the primary source of knowledge to a “designer of learning experiences” and a “mediator of digital tools” (Sailer et al., 2023).
5.3 AI Literacy for Students: Fostering Critical Prompters and Users
Students must be taught to be savvy, critical users of AI. This involves explicit instruction on:
- Prompt Engineering
How to craft effective prompts to get useful, specific feedback from AI.
- Critical Evaluation:
How to cross-verify AI-generated information and assess the quality of its suggestions.
- Ethical Application
Understanding the boundaries of acceptable use, the importance of transparency, and how to cite AI assistance appropriately.
5.4 Institutional Policies: Setting the Ground Rules
Universities must take a leadership role by developing clear, consistent, and educative policies on academic integrity in the age of AI. These policies should move beyond simple prohibition towards promoting responsible use. Furthermore, institutions should invest in infrastructure and digital access to bridge the inequality gap.

Artificial Intelligence has indisputably instigated a major transformation in EFL pedagogy in Algeria, presenting unprecedented opportunities to enhance academic writing skills. It provides a scalable mechanism for individualized feedback, powerfully supports the development of learner autonomy, and, when guided wisely, can act as a catalyst for critical thinking and metacognitive reflection. However, this paradigm shift is not a simple technological upgrade; it is a profound pedagogical evolution that demands careful, considered handling. The successful and equitable integration of AI into Algerian EFL classrooms hinges on the simultaneous development of robust ethical guidelines, comprehensive teacher training, and a deeply ingrained culture of critical digital literacy among students. In sum, AI represents a powerful lever for change—one that can significantly enrich Algerian EFL writing instruction, but only if we learn to wield it with wisdom, responsibility, and a clear pedagogical vision.
- Limitations and Directions for Future Research
As a conceptual and narrative review, this study is inherently limited by its reliance on secondary data rather than direct empirical observation. While the synthesis of recent studies provides valuable insights into the evolving pedagogical role of AI in Algerian EFL contexts, the findings remain interpretive in nature. Future research should incorporate primary data through experimental designs, classroom-based interventions, and longitudinal studies to measure the direct effects of AI-assisted writing tools on students’ writing proficiency, critical thinking development, and academic integrity. In addition, comparative studies across different Algerian universities and educational levels would offer a more comprehensive picture of AI’s pedagogical impact and contribute to the development of evidence-based national guidelines.
