The competency-based approach is a cognitive one that learners may achieve higher order objectives. It is said that the suggested approach is considered as a problem-solving key to be used by the learners. The present study focuses on the effect of competency based approach on the writing ability of Iranian English language learners. A number of 40 students were selected for the study. In the present study, the researcher applied two questionnaires and interviews. The researcher used accuracy and complexity criteria to assess their writings. The results investigated that the learners achieved statistically greater levels in accuracy and complexity. Seemingly, the approach definitely let students develop their writing capabilities.
