Algerian University Students’ Perceptions of Engagement in the Foreign Language Classroom

In today’s globalised and degitalised age, students are continuously exposed to information via multiple channels. It bears emphasising that students are different from what they were decades ago in terms of needs and interests. Yet, motivating them to engage with English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is crucial; however, motivation alone remains insufficient since it requires implementation through involving and engaging students so as to create a learning environment where everyone can participate actively and have a voice in the classroom as well as beyond its walls. Thus, investigating students’ engagement seems to be a priority. In the intended research, a descriptive design will be applied in which student engagement questionnaires will be used as a tool for the purpose of data collection to better understand the viewpoints of students about the crucial role of engagement and find out how it can be promoted to impact their motivation and make them active agents in the learning process.
